About the club:

I work with a team of dedicated design students where we connect and uplift graphic designers within Columbia. We host meetings, guest speakers, mixers, and showcase students and their work on our Instagram. We follow a style guide created by former student Nick Rissmeyer that allows us to have an easily recognizable identity across platforms.

Student Showcase: Portrait Photography

I take portraits of design students in our ongoing Student Showcase series where we feature a student and their favorite pieces of work on our Instagram page. It allows a bigger audience to see some of the great work that students are creating at Columbia.

To give this series its own identity within our brand guidelines, all portraits are shot in black and white, have elements of high contrasting shadows, and bright yellow type. With the help and assistance from club member Carlo Ruiz, I have done 4 shoots so far with more to come!


Alumni Chats: Design Identity

Alumni Chats is a student-alumni interview that we started this semester, Fall 2020. A student or students reach out to former Graphic Design students and set up an interview where we post to IGTV on Instagram. It has been extremely insightful and uplifting to hear about former what life was like before and after graduation, and it has helped keep our community of Graphic Designers connected.

Because Alumni Chats was such a new concept for our club, I wanted this series to have a identity of it’s own. I created this layout that we apply to all of our social media posts. It strays from the brand guidelines in a few ways, by introducing three new colors that we do not typically use, including white, aqua, and translucent pink. Inspired by the moon-like shapes you’d see in mid-century modern designs, this fresh spin has been a nice addition to our brand, while still keeping the main elements the same: Helvetica and AIGA Columbia Yellow.
